How Do Septic Systems Work?

The Septic Tank

Your septic tank is the underground receptacle that holds your home’s or business’ waste. The contents inside the septic tank include solid waste, or sludge, which settles to the bottom; fat, oil and grease, which floats to the top; and liquid waste, or effluent and suspended solids in between.

Distribution Box

Effluent filters out of the septic tank and travels to the distribution box. Only liquid waste must make it past the septic tank filter. If solid waste enters your drain field, many problems will arise. The distribution box sends the liquid waste through multiple pipes toward the drain field to return to the ground.

Drain Field

Your liquid waste travels to the drain field, also known as the leach bed. This is a system of connected perforated pipes that are laid below ground on top of layered gravel or crushed stone. The wastewater slowly feeds into the ground through the perforated pipes. The liquid waste gets filtered through the gravel and soil, where it purifies and returns to the groundwater.
